4 Ways to Spark Creativity

Spark Creativity

I find it difficult at times to put my paintbrush to canvas or thread to fabric and create. This can be frustrating for myself and other artist because: (1) it is time consuming, (2) it is a damper on our spirits, and (3) many of our livelihoods depend on producing creative work. Thankfully, I have found ways to help light that creative spark. My hope is that they will help you as well. Here are 4 Ways To Spark Creativity.

1. Brainstorm

Are you a writer? Write. Do you draw? Doodle. Are you a dancer? Dance. Whatever you are, just do it in overload. Fill the pages your notebook with words and run-on sentences that don’t make sense. Fill your sketchbook with layers and layers of unrecognizable drawings. Dance like no one is watching (because they aren’t). Your work does not have to be perfect. The goal of this exercise is for you to let out all of your creativity and see what options you have moving forward. Through this process, I’ve personally found some great ideas for creative projects.

2. Travel

Travelling widens your perspective and introduces you to new cultures and experiences. It is a wonderful tool to build inspiration in your creative work. You don’t have to travel outside of your country or even your city to be inspired. I visit the local art museum and attend various events in my city.

3. Rest 4 Ways Creativity

Sometimes you experience burnout from overthinking your next creative move. At this point, there really is nothing else that you can do. My advice is to rest. Take a nap, go on a walk or read a book. Spend time doing an activity away from your art and then come back to it. After a good rest, I am able to see my work in a fresh light. I come up with ideas that I previously never thought of.

4. Learn a new technique

I believe that learning a new technique is the easiest way to spark creativity. Incorporating one into your regimen is transformative to creative work because it forces you to try something completely different. For example, I taught myself how to make and use stamps. Now I use them to print designs on fabric. I read books, watch YouTube videos and, when possible, take art classes to learn new techniques.

Take 15 minutes today to read, write down, and meditate on this scripture: “Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given, and then sink yourself into that. Don’t be impressed with yourself. Don’t compare yourself with others. Each of you must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own life.” - Galatians 6:4-5 (MSG)
