I celebrated my mother’s 60th birthday with family and her close friends this month. We called the occasion a “Sweet Sixty,” a playful twist on “Sweet Sixteen.” We had an enjoyable time filled with laughter and lots of sweets.
My sisters and I planned the celebration, each of us contributing uniquely. My role, as always, was to infuse the space with love through handcrafted decorations. A decade ago, I undertook the same task for my mother’s 50th birthday, and I shared the journey in one of my earliest blog posts on Sharifa Creates.
My mom’s Sweet Sixty color scheme was bright yellow, orange, and green with a hint of gold. We incorporated plants and flowers into the theme because she recently became a plant mom. I made a welcome sign, backdrop, and party favors. Here’s how I created everything:
Welcome Sign
I wanted the welcome sign to be simple but vibrant. I painted three layers of white paint onto a circular white plaque. I then painted yellow abstract flowers, accentuating their shape with a black paint marker. Lastly, I used my Cricut machine to create the lettering.
Backdrop
I originally planned to make a fringe backdrop but needed more time. Instead, I decided to do a color-block backdrop. I purchased bold-colored fabric that complemented the party’s color scheme. I draped the fabric over a simple white background and added a gold balloon arch.
Party Favors
My final task was to create party favors. My sister suggested an affirmation card. Instead, I decided to make what I call declaration cards. They are like affirmation cards, except you declare a scripture. My mother’s love for the Word of God and the idea of sharing it with her guests inspired me. I asked my mother for her favorite Bible verses. I took them and designed cards in a graphic design application. I printed them at a store offering print services, cut the cards to size, and placed them in packaging.
My mother and guests loved the party decorations, particularly the personal touch of the declaration cards. I made everything in less than one week. The pressure to complete the decorations on time stretched my creative capacity in new ways. I was reminded that I could create anything.
