Welcome to Motivational Monday! Today is the start of a new series on Sharifa Creates. As the name implies, I’ll post something to motivate you at the beginning each week.
I LOVE commencement speeches. I graduated from college three years ago, but I still find encouragement in these speeches, even if it’s just sound bites. It is no surprise that I found myself rolling out of my bed at 8 am a few Saturdays ago to watch the commencement address at my alma mater, Rice University. Dr. Mae Jemison, the first Black woman to go into space, was the speaker. Her message was inspirational, but what stuck with me were the words at the conclusion of her speech. They were simple:
“Life is best when you live deeply and look up.”
“Live deeply and look up.”
These words can mean different things to different people. So today, I would like to share my take on what it means to live deeply and look up.

“Then the Lord told me: ‘I will give you my message in the form of a vision. Write it clearly enough to be read at a glance. At the time I have decided, my words will come true. You can trust what I say about the future. It may take a long time, but keep on waiting— it will happen!’” – Habakkuk 2:2-3, CEV
God has a purpose for everyone! Isn’t that amazing news? What’s even more amazing is that we don’t have to figure out our purpose on our own. When we seek after God, He reveals His purpose to us through His word and equips us with the tools to carry it out. One tool that God blesses us with is vision.
Vision is the ability to imagine our future-selves working and attaining specific Continue reading “Corkboard Vision Board DIY”
Being a creative is fulfilling, but it can be a challenge at times. We face opposition from critics who believe that art is not a necessity. They try to discourage creatives from pursuing our passions by constantly presenting us with the stereotypical, starving artist. And, when an organization makes budget cuts, the arts are usually the first sector to go.
Whether you’re a visual artist, writer, performing artist or social media guru, I’m here to tell you that your creative gift has a purpose. If God blessed you with that gift, IT HAS A PURPOSE! Don’t allow anyone to tell you otherwise. It’s your responsibility to use your gift for good regardless of the fears and doubts of yourself or anyone else. You have to let your light shine through! Many are praying that 2017 will be way better than 2016. In the final weeks of 2016, people poured their hearts out on social media, documenting all of the horrible things that happened in their lives. I was surprised. Out everything that occurred, nothing positive came out of 2016? Not even the small things?
My first blog post of the New Year is one that will encourage you throughout 2017. Count your blessings even in the midst of hardship with what I call A Little Jar of Goodness. Continue reading “A Little Jar of Goodness”
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from me to you! I hope your day is filled with the love, joy, and peace of Jesus Christ. As the day progresses, remember to do these 3 things as you celebrate His birth:
- Give without the expectation of receiving.
- Be grateful.
- Encourage someone.
Have a blessed and safe Christmas Day! I will see you in 2017. – Sharifa Creates
With the start of the 2016, people are making huge New Year’s resolutions- everything from starting a business to losing weight. I set pretty big goals for myself as well, but in addition to them, I set a few simple ones. Sometimes I become so preoccupied trying to accomplish work that I forget to relax! These simple goals are no pressure activities that will allow me to enjoy the smaller moments of 2016 and learn new things about myself.

It happens to the best of us. We spend hours on Pinterest looking for the perfect do-it-yourself project to try out. We then head to the craft store only to have all of our hopes and dreams crushed by the cost of supplies. Sigh. Could it be that the materials are overpriced or do we just have “insufficient funds”? I find that it is a combination of both. Whatever the reason, it doesn’t have to be the end of our crafting dreams. I have found ways to navigate the pricey craft world. I present to you 5 Ways to Craft on a Budget! Continue reading “5 Ways to Craft on a Budget”
I find it difficult at times to put my paintbrush to canvas or thread to fabric and create. This can be frustrating for myself and other artist because: (1) it is time consuming, (2) it is a damper on our spirits, and (3) many of our livelihoods depend on producing creative work. Thankfully, I have found ways to help light that creative spark. My hope is that they will help you as well. Here are 4 Ways To Spark Creativity: Continue reading “4 Ways to Spark Creativity”
Elementary school through college, my classmates would ask me how I managed to stay so organized. What was my secret? Was it that I carried multicolored sticky notes everywhere or that I kept a weekly planner? Possibly, but it was mainly what I did with those items. This post is for all of my former classmates and those who have a hard time staying organized. Here are 6 Steps to Organize Your Day: Continue reading “6 Steps to Organize Your Day”
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:14-16
From a young age I was blessed with the gift of artistic creativity. My creativity invests itself in many ways: crafting, sewing, writing and drawing. You name it and I can do it. If I do not, I will teach myself.
Before starting college, I always made time to express myself creatively. At any given moment you could find me making a pair of pajama pants, painting on paper weights Continue reading “About Sharifa Creates”
