To be honest, I’ve never worn scrunchies. Still I always admired how they could effortlessly be stretched, twisted, and popped to hold hair in place. The process of learning how to make scrunchies was not nearly as easy as using them. It was like perfecting a recipe. Through much trial and error, I finally got the “formula” right! Keep reading to learn how to make scrunchies.

How To Make Scrunchies
Supplies
- Scrunchie pattern
- Fabric (at least 1/4 yard)
- Hair ties
- Tailor’s chalk
- Scissors and thread
- Sewing machine
Instructions
Use the scrunchie pattern to cut the necessary amount of fabric. Then, with the pattern’s guide and Tailor’s chalk, mark a line at each end of the rectangle.

Fold the rectangle in half, wrong side out.

Place the hair tie in the fold and pin at the line.

Stitch the raw edge length together with a ⅝” seam allowance, starting at the line. The fabric will scrunch up as you sew, so straighten the edge along the way. Stop sewing at the opposite line and back stitch.

Flip the scrunchie right side out.

Sew the raw edge width together.

Stitch the opening closed.

Take 15 minutes today to read, write down, and meditate on this scripture: “For thus saith the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.” – Isaiah 30:15
