My favorite seasonal decorations are rustic fall signs. They are a wonderful way to embrace the cozy and festive atmosphere of autumn. These signs are easy to create! In today’s blog post, I will give you a detailed walk through of how to make a rustic fall sign.
To start, you need to draft a quick sketch of your sign. What shape do you want it to be? What do you want it to say? What colors will you use? These are all questions I answered before making my sign. I searched Pinterest for inspiration, specifically for cute messages. In the end, I decided to make two rectangular shaped rustic signs. One with the message “Autumn Skies, Pumpkin Pies” and the other with “Pumpkin Kisses, Harvest Wishes”.
After planning the logistics, gather your materials. Here is a list of everything I needed:
- 1 17”x11” Wood Pallet Plaque
- 1 10” Square Wood Pallet Plaque
- Acrylic Craft Paint
- Chalk
- Paint Brushes
Use the chalk to write your fall message on the wood pallet. If you make a mistake, simply erase it and keep moving. When your message is written to your liking, grab a paint brush. Dab a small amount of paint onto your brush and outline the letters. Then go back and thicken the letters with at least two layers of paint. Watch my “Paint With Me” video to see exactly how I painted one of my rustic fall signs. I specifically used small, round and angled brushes to paint my signs. They gave me more control of the lettering to help fine tune the details!
This process requires patience and a steady hand. It took me about an hour to paint each sign. I later added flowers to the second sign which took an additional hour. This project will allow you to slow down, relax, and focus on creating something beautiful.
Once your rustic fall sign is dry, you can decorate! Place it by the front door, fireplace, or hang it in your living room. You can even use it as a prop in a styled fall photoshoot.
Rustic signs are not just for autumn. With the holiday season coming up, you can certainly create a Thanksgiving or Christmas themed sign!
