Hair scrunchies never go away. They only evolve! I am surprised by how designers develop more innovative scrunchie styles even though they have been around for decades. There are jumbo scrunchies, super skinny scrunchies, scrunchie barrettes, scrunchies with zippers where you can store money, and even scrunchie earrings.
Among these unique styles, one that stands out is the scrunchie barrette. It is a simple yet functional accessory you can easily clip into your hair. In this fun and achievable DIY project, I’ll show you how to make a scrunchie barrette.
Scrunchie Barrette DIY Tutorial
Materials
- ¼ yd of fabric
- ⅜ in iron-on adhesive hem tape
- 8.8 mm x 78 mm French barrette blanks
- Thread
Equipment
- Iron
- Sewing machine or needle
- Sewing scissors
- Pinking shears
- Hot glue gun
Instructions
Cut a 3″ x 8″ rectangle from the fabric.
Cut two 3″ strips of iron-on adhesive hem tape.
With the rectangle’s wrong side up, fold and press its ends by 3/8″ to create a hem. Then, insert the tape into the seams and press again.
Fold the rectangle in half, lengthwise, with the wrong side out, and pin the sides together.
Stitch the edges together with a ¼” seam allowance.
Shear the seam allowance and press it open. This step will reduce bulk and make the next steps easier.
Flip the fabric tube to the right side out and press.
Remove the middle piece of the French barrette.
Slide the fabric tube onto the barrette and reattach the middle piece.
Hot glue the fabric tube to the French barrette’s edges.
