JOANN officially closed its doors. I held out on hope that, miraculously, someone would swoop in and save this fabric retailer from bankruptcy. JOANN played a key role in my growth as a sewist. I have fond childhood memories of watching my mom and grandmother buy fabric and patterns to make my school dresses. I eventually would walk the aisle looking for the perfect fabric to make an outfit or accessory. Two years ago, my local JOANN relocated to a larger building that elevated the shopping experience. If I had an idea for a project, I could go to JOANN the same day for a full day of sketching before searching for materials.

Now that JOANN is closed, many sewists must find other stores to purchase fabric. My nearest fabric store is now an hour away, so the best place for me to buy fabric is online. Online fabric shopping is not new to me, but it took time to warm up to the concept. As someone who likes to lay eyes and hands on fabric before purchasing, I questioned how I would know the fabric’s actual color and texture. Not to mention shipping.
However, after my first purchase, I quickly learned the benefits of online fabric shopping. The cost of fabric per yard is less expensive than the cost in-store. There is a greater selection of fabric online. And most shops offer free or low-cost fabric samples. Regarding shipping times, I am more intentional about planning my projects, which curbs impulse spending and saves me money.

My advice in finding online fabric stores is to do your research. Check the store’s reviews both on their website and social media. The color of the fabric may differ from one device screen to another. I suggest getting fabric samples, especially before buying fabric for unique projects. Review the shipping and return policies so there are no surprises if issues arise.
Where do I shop for fabric online? Websites like the Online Fabric Store and Fabric Wholesale Direct have a colorful selection of fabrics – everything from broadcloth and interlock to satin and chiffon. Zelouf and Project Runway’s famous Mood Fabrics have an abundant stock of specialty fabric. And you cannot go wrong with Etsy. Numerous small businesses sell fabric on this platform, ensuring you find what you need.
Although JOANN is out of business, our creativity will never go bankrupt! It is simply time to pivot and sew new memories.
