Earlier this month, my family and I celebrated my mother’s 50th birthday. It’s a blessing to make half a century. My siblings and I contributed our expertise to make my mother’s day extra special. Some cooked while others provided entertainment. Being the crafty person I am, I created decorations just for the occasion. Keep reading to see them for yourself!
The Big 5-0
What better way to express “The Big 5-0” than with a large 5 and 0. I painted wood numbers yellow and embellished them with gold foil. I then hot glued the numbers onto wood rectangles to make them stand up straight.

Fun Facts of 1964
My initial goal was to find fifty interesting events of 1964, but time only allowed me to find twenty five. I highlighted my mother’s date of birth as the most interesting event.

M&M’s Jars
I filled small Mason jars with peanut M&M’s (my mom’s favorite), tied a yellow ribbon around the rim, and spelled out “The Big 5-0” on them with stickers.

Tissue Paper Flowers
My tissue paper flowers came in handy once again! I made four large flowers and grouped them together to make one large flower ball that hung from my ceiling fan (not pictured). And, with the assistance of my sister, I created three small tissue paper flowers and placed them in mini tin buckets.

Huge Texas Mum
My favorite decoration was a mum that I made for my mom. Although traditionally used for high school homecoming celebrations in Texas, mums have also been used in recent years for baby showers and birthdays. I kept the traditional long, hanging ribbons, but used yellow flowers for the main piece. Since my mom loves ladybugs, I hand stitched lady bug buttons onto the ribbons. They really complemented the yellow flowers.

The completed celebration table included all of the above decorations. I enjoyed making each one and my mother absolutely LOVED them!
