How To Make Glitter Paint

Crafters and glitter have a love-hate relationship. While glitter is an exciting medium to work with, it is painful to clean up. It trails behind you long after you are done crafting. I could write a whole blog post on the strange places I have found glitter.

What is the solution? Glitter paint!

Normally, glitter is shaken into wet glue and then dusted away. This method causes glitter to spread everywhere. Glitter paint is applied directly to a surface which eliminates the need to remove excess glitter. It also seals the glitter, preventing it from rubbing off.

In today’s DIY tutorial, I will show you how to make glitter paint. Making it yourself allows you to customize the glitter’s color, shape, and size as well as the paint’s density. It is a simple process! Keep reading for instructions.

How To Make Glitter Paint

Supplies

  • Glitter
  • Glue*
  • Paint palette
  • Palette knife
  • Synthetic paint brush

*You can use regular white glue, craft glue, or a slow drying blending medium. The latter provides the best results!

Instructions

Step One: Measure

Squeeze glue on the paint palette. Then sprinkle twice as much glitter into it. A 1:2 ratio of glue to glitter is a good starting point. Adjust it based on how densely you want the glitter concentrated.

Step Two: Mix

Gently and thoroughly mix the glue and glitter together with the palette knife.

Step Three: Apply

Apply the glitter paint to your craft project with either a palette knife or synthetic paintbrush.

Step Four: Dry

Let the paint dry before adding more layers (if necessary).

Glitter paint can be used on paper, canvas, wood, or any surface appropriate for craft paint. I recommend that you only create enough glitter paint for your project. Regular white glue and craft glue dry quickly. If you must store the paint, make it with a slow drying blending medium. Clean your palette and application tools with a damp paper towel.
