High school was all about self-expression. I expressed myself through clothing. I customized t-shirts, jackets, and accessories to match my individuality. I did not have a fancy cutting machine or a screen-printing press back then. Only a handmade stencil, fabric paint, and a paintbrush. The creation process was long but rewarding as I saw my ideas come to life as wearable art.
Although I now use technology, I still appreciate making everything by hand. You do not need sophisticated equipment to create beautiful artwork.
I will show you how to make a handmade stencil in today’s DIY tutorial. You can use it to personalize signs, clothing, and more. Continue reading for the instructions!
How to Make a Stencil by Hand
Supplies
- Stencil film or cardstock
- Craft knife
- Double-sided tape
- Cutting mat
- Permanent marker
- A printed or sketched image you want to make into a stencil.
Instructions
Step One: Place (for stencil film only)
Work on a flat surface. Place your printed or sketched image underneath the stencil film. Use tape to secure the paper to prevent it from shifting in the next step.
Step Two: Trace
Trace the image with a permanent marker. Remove the printed or sketched picture. Then place the stencil film on a cutting mat.
If you are working with cardstock, draw your design directly onto it.
Step Three: Cut
Cut away the image’s positive space with a craft knife. When working with letters, keep the pieces of film (circles, triangles, etc.) that make letters. Tape them to the stencil with double-sided tape.
Step Four: Create
Begin using your stencil to create art! I made two stencils – one to design fabric for a drawstring bag and the second to make an inspirational sign. Here is a short list of everything you can customize with stencils:
- T-shirts
- Greeting cards
- Wood signs
- Tote bags
- Canvas shoes
- Placemats
- Table runners
The possibilities are endless!
