How I Made Confetti with a Cutting Machine

Every creative has a moment when they decide to DIY. I had this experience a few weeks ago. I was shopping for confetti shaped like graduation caps. I hoped to find what I needed because it was graduation season. After visiting multiple stores and craft aisles, my search came up empty. I decided to make the graduation cap confetti myself.

First, I gathered my materials and equipment. I already had gold and holographic cardstock in my paper stash, so I did not need to purchase additional materials. I used my handy cutting machine to avoid the tedious work of tracing and then cutting graduation caps by hand. I can create almost anything with it, including confetti.

Next, I opened my favorite graphic design application and created an 8.5” by 11” document. I searched the clip art selection for graduation caps. I specifically needed one that was fully connected with no gaps. I found the correct type of graduation cap and added it to the page. I repeated the clip art across the page and from top to bottom. I downloaded it as a PNG file without a background.

I uploaded the image to my cutting machine’s workspace, locked it, and formatted it to fit the cardstock’s dimensions. Then, I let my cutting machine do the rest of the work. Weeding the graduation caps took little effort; I quickly scraped them off the mat. The results were so good that I went ahead and created confetti shaped like diplomas. I combined the confetti with chunky blue glitter and curly gold and silver ribbon to take it to the next level.

You always take a risk when it comes to DIY-ing, but customizing my confetti was well worth it! Tell me about a time when you decided to DIY instead of buy. Comment below!

Take 15 minutes today to read, write down, and meditate on this scripture: “No temptation has come upon you except what is common to humanity. But God is faithful; he will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to bear it.” – 1 Corinthians 10:13 (CSB)
