One thing I enjoy about being a visual artist is bringing another person’s creative vision to life. This summer, I took on a custom project after a year-long hiatus. I made decorations for my mother’s “Sweet Sixty” birthday celebration. After making her party decorations, I realized how custom projects allow me to challenge and expand my creative capabilities. I desired to take on another project. Thankfully, a few weeks later, my sister had an opportunity for me. She was planning a baby shower for a close friend and wanted me to make a welcome sign and mum. I gladly accepted!
Her friend is expecting a girl, so they decided to have a garden-themed baby shower emphasizing flowers and butterflies. The color scheme was lavender, blush pink, periwinkle, and gold. I incorporated these details into each item.
Welcome Sign

I made the welcome sign first. It had a dual purpose – to greet guests and serve as décor for the baby’s nursery after the shower. I painted a large circular plaque white and free-handed, flowy, abstract flowers onto it. I outlined the flowers with a gold paint marker to accentuate their shape. I used my cutting machine to cut the baby’s name from gold vinyl and adhered it to the sign. As a finishing touch, I added gold 3-D butterflies to elevate the sign. I arranged the butterflies to give them the appearance of fluttering around the flowers.

Mum

Mums are extravagant accessories that Texas high school students wear during homecoming festivities. The use of mums has recently expanded to baby showers. I hot-glued ribbon and a faux flower to a cardboard base to create the mum. I then made a button that read “Mommy to Be” and tied in an abstract flower and a small 3-D butterfly.

This project turned out better than I imagined. My sister and her friend loved the welcome sign and mum. I plan to take on more custom work before the year ends.
