Flower vases are basic room décor items. You can find them literally everywhere- doctors’ offices, model homes, your auntie’s house… just everywhere! Until recently I felt that flower vases were super outdated and overdone. However, I began to see the beauty in them after scrolling through Pinterest and seeing pin after pin of unique flower vases. People were using them to decorate spaces for weddings and dinner parties. Many were used for conventional purposes, but they nicely pulled the room together. I was so inspired that I had to create one for myself. Some people paint their vases and embellish them with glitter and jewels, but I decided to gold leaf mine!
The gold leafing process takes a lot of patience. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll want to gold leaf everything. I used this technique to create the wedding centerpieces in my last blog post.
Okay! Now how to make a gold leaf flower vase…
Update July 12, 2016- Scroll to the end and view the YouTube video tutorial for this project!
Materials
For this DIY project you will need a glass vase of any size, gold leaf, leaf adhesive, Mod Podge, masking tape, and a paint brush.
Instructions
Wrap a strip of masking tape around the circumference of your glass vase. You can place it at any height.
Paint one layer of leaf adhesive underneath the strip of tape. You can also use Mod Podge as leaf adhesive.
Take one sheet of gold leaf and gently press and smooth it against the adhesive. Repeat until all of it is covered.
Once the adhesive dries, use a dry paintbrush to brush excess leaf off the vase. Breaks in the foil are normal. They add a stylish effect to the vase.
Seal the foil by painting one layer of Mod Podge on top of it.
When the Mod Podge dries, remove the tape and add flowers to the vase.
