Texture art has played a special role in my creative journey. It all began eight years ago. I was looking for a way to create freely without getting bogged down in the details. I started abstract painting, but once I learned how to incorporate texture into my artwork, I knew I found the perfect form of self-expression.
You are in the right place if you need a creative outlet. In this DIY tutorial, I will show you how to paint texture art. Keep reading for step-by-step instructions.
Texture Painting DIY Tutorial
Supplies
- Acrylic paint
- Modeling Paste
- Acrylic paint mediums that add character and volume to paintings
- Varnish
- Canvas or art panel
- Paint palette
- Palette knives
Instructions
1. Mix paint.
Scoop acrylic paint, modeling paste, and paint mediums onto the palette. The amount you use of each substance will depend on the size of your surface and the level of dimension you are trying to build. I generally start off using equal parts of acrylic paint and modeling paste. I then add gel mediums to improve the flow of the paint. As a rule of thumb, learn about the paint mediums and how to use them.
Gently mix the acrylic paint, modeling paste, and paint mediums together. Over-mixing will cause too many bubbles to form, which can affect the overall appearance of your painting.
2. Apply paint.
Apply the paint to the canvas or art panel, using palette knives to build volume and create texture. This is where the fun begins! Texture painting is space for you to be your authentic self, experiment, and make mistakes. These ‘mistakes’ are not setbacks but unexpected opportunities that will help you develop your unique texture art aesthetic.
3. Dry, then varnish.
Patience is key in the drying process of your texture art. Depending on the amount of paint used, it can take anywhere from one week to one month for your painting to dry completely. Varnish your painting to protect it from wear and tear. Allow time for drying before displaying your work.

Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen.” – Ephesians 3:20-21 (NLT)
